Gift certificates

I have looked at the Gift certificates in ZC and it seems that the cart uses the amount of the credit inside the cart.

what I don't understand is where that is controlled.
As far as I can tell when I setup a Gift Certificate, I want to be able to ship it to the customer and they can do with what he/she wants.

Did I miss something?

When you set up a gift certificate and the customer buys it (completes payment and checkout), they are sent an email with a redemption code. When they redeem that code either by clicking on the link or by keying in the code on the checkout-payment page (or the gv-redemption screen), then the customer will have GV funds available to them for use in that or future transactions.
The customer can then use it during a transaction of their own, or they can forward parts or all of it to others by supplying an email address. If they email it to someone, the redemption process starts again with a new redemption code ...

Thanks, that sounds like a good system. I'll have to see it in action if I sell a gift certificate.

Since I only sell the gift certificates in the US I don't think I have to worry about that for a while but it definately sounds like something I would use.
