Attributes - Validation

Hi everyone, is there anyway of forcing someone to choose from a selection of attribute options when they add it to basket?

Basically I have a product with size options and i want to ensure the customer chooses their size before adding it to the shopping cart.

Also how do position the attributes in the product page in the shop, it would make sense to have it above the add to basket button!

Did anyone sort this out, validating a choice is made from an attribute before it can be added to the cart. I am looking for the solution to this as well.

On attributes, I always make an extra Option Value and call it something like:
Pick one ...
Your choice ...
What do you want ...
Select from below ...

And set it to the:
Default YES
Display Only YES
Sort Order 0

and this forces the customer to make a valid choice rather than get the Red X-Small T-Shirt they will order the Yellow Large T-Shirt that they meant to order in the first place ...
