Looking for a template

I'm starting a new site and was wondering if anybody could point me in the direction of a good template for a children’s toys website. I've been downloading some of the free templates but not many of them have pictures of what the template looks like.

The site Merlin recommended will allow you to see all the templates "in action" and you can judge which one you can adapt to your purpose.

Do I put the downloaded files in template default so they are displayed instead of the standard template? e.g. replace the graphics in template_default/buttons with the template buttons?

No you will upload the template folders into the includes/templates folder
like you see
includes/templates/classic

Does zencart detect includes/templates/arch_shoppe as a custom template and automatically use this template as the default or do I need to tweak some code.

You need to go into your admin under tools->template selection and select the desired template from the dropdown menu.
