Looking for a template

Do I put the downloaded files in template default so they are displayed instead of the standard template? e.g. replace the graphics in template_default/buttons with the template buttons?

No you will upload the template folders into the includes/templates folder
like you see
includes/templates/classic

Does zencart detect includes/templates/arch_shoppe as a custom template and automatically use this template as the default or do I need to tweak some code.

You need to go into your admin under tools->template selection and select the desired template from the dropdown menu.

I have installed many templates in earlier versions with no problem. I uploaded several templates in a new install of verison 1.3.7.1 and none of them show up in the dropdown. Any suggestions?

Do all the templates have a includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/template_info.php file?
