Invitation Only to Register

Please let me know if this is possible..

I want to setup the entire cart where no one can register unless they are invited. Does anyone know of the best way to go about doing this?

I don't know if there is any mod about this, if not then you have to write it. Are you a familiar with PHP and mysql?

Yes, maybe send them an email to notify them where to register.

As a guess, using the split login and deleting the parts that send a new user to register, and then e-mailing a prospect the link to the create account page, might work. That wouldn't prevent a savvy person from guessing or figuring out the same link.
Is that still not secure enough, or would it do the job?
And just curious, what is the harm in somebody trying to register for your site without an invitation?
