That's typically the case for most complex systems (like operating systems). I had hoped that FEC would not be behaving as such.
Mine doesn't involve any shipping (all downloadables). I am not even testing it with PayPal (yet). What I reported was testing freebies with the "ZenCart FREE Charge Card".
Nope. My install is 100% fresh, directly to FEC 1.8.1.
Some of the delay can be attributed to combining 3 different steps into one. That is perceived delay and is understandable.
However, the slowness is apparent even when clicking a product link to read its description. This could be a deal breaker.
I wouldn't mind installing FEC on the operational store, tracking the results and, if it turns out to worsen things, uninstall it -- if I could restore the entire system to exactly the previous state it was before.
The problem is that restoring to exactly the previous state is extremely difficult, given that some core files are being modified, database tables (and dependencies!) have been added and new customer/purchases records will be added as well. This makes reversal extremely difficult. In my view, once FEC has been introduced to an operational store, there is no turning back.
