Please help with customizing!!!

I am trying to customize my cart and have been doing it with dreamweaver. The thing is I never know if what i am changing is right because i cant see any designs but html writting. is there a better software where i can actually see the button/images that i am changing.

The Firefox Web Developer extension has Edit CSS and Edit HTML functions that show the effects of edits instantaneously. When you are satisfied, you can save the edits to the real files... I can't describe that process in detail because I make actual edits in Notepad++, then refresh to see the effect. This is for my local development copy of Zen Cart.

Thanks for the info. Is there a free trial online anywhere that you know of? I downloaded firefox web browser but i dont think that is what i am suppose to do.

Once you install Firefox, you can get extensions for it - the Firefox site should have details. You can also download Web Developer from its author's site at www.chrispederick.com.

Is there a document which describes custom/stylesheet.css ?
What area controls what.

I upgraded Zen Card was from 1.2.6 to 1.3.7.
I see that all my custom folders are still there with files 1.2.6 which are similar to 1.3.7.

What is right way to recover customization?

Should I delete to begin with all my custom folders 1.2.6 and create new by copying source from 1.3.7 files?

Please, suggest.

You can use something like WinMerge to compare the 1.2.6 stylesheet(s) to the 1.3.7 stylesheet(s). I brought a site from 1.2.7 to 1.3.7, so it can be done.

Search in the Upgrading from 1.2 to 1.3.x forum - there were a ton of questions and answers a year or more ago when v1.3 was relatively new.

The stylesheets will be so different that comparing may not help enough. Get Firefox and its Web Developer extension described above, and you will be able to see the ids/classes which control various elements, and then find or add them in your stylesheet and edit. Start with a clean copy of the 1.3.7 stylesheet and add to that as necessary.

I have downloaded the web developer but it wont let me open the file that is the .xpi. It says i dont have that program. Can anyone help?

I'm not the best person to answer this because I really don't know that much, but it did the same thing to me and I just used Firefox to download and install it. Open Firefox, go to Tools - Ad Ons then click Find Updates at the bottom. When it gets to the Firefox site, just browse till you find the Web Developer tool or search for it, then click the download or update and it will install it for you. Worked for me.
