Default I thought I created the overrides correctly, but page is not the same

Well, I am working on finishing up a zen cart setup for a friend of mine. I'm jumping into the middle of getting this website setup. Someone else did the initial setup. This is the first time I've worked with zen cart or pretty much and web development. But I can read a manual and a FAQ! So, I haven't seen the answer to my question anywhere in my searching.

The site is using the classic template so far but from what I understand I should be running with a CUSTOM template for upgrdading purposes. So I understand this and have read through the over ride FAQ and I think I understand everything clearly.

So, I went through and added my own CUSTOM directories in all the right places. (I followed the nice picture in the FAQ). I have custom and CLASSIC folders in the same directories.

Since I want to preserve the current "template" I carefully copied the same files from all the CLASSIC directories into the CUSTOM directories. So the CUSTOM directories mirror the CLASSIC directories

I was hoping that after doing all this when I selected my "custom" template the website would look the same as the classic template. but it doesn't some older version of the site is attached to the top.. then the correct page is added on below. The styles aren't right either. hmm

Are there some config files somewhere I am missing? Somehow zencart is deciding to display something different but its not specified in my over ride directories. or I just goofed up

You don't need to copy every file in every "classic" folder. You only need to copy the ones you (or someone) modified. It's less confusing that way.

To create a very basic custom template (you can build from there), you need:
    • includes/languages/YOUR_TEMPLATE/english.php
    • includes/languages/english/YOUR_TEMPLATE/index.php
    • includes/languages/english/YOUR_TEMPLATE/header.php (to change the logo)
    • includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/template_info.php
    • includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/common/tpl_header.php
    • includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/common/tpl_footer.php
    • includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/images/logo.gif
    • includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/css/stylesheet.css

Anywhere you see a /classic/ folder, you can create a folder for your custom template. You can copy the necessary files from either the /classic/ folder, the /template_default/ folder or the parent folder.

Edit includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/template_info.php to give your template identifying information so you'll recognize it in the admin under tools->template selection.

I totally understand what you are saying but here is the problem...

This site is already halfway done its not a fresh template. So I wish to preserve the work already done and copy it to a new template. So it looks like there are settings that are not set in just those over-ride directories.

You should be able to tell what files were modified by the dates on the files. Use my list as a starting point. There are some settings in the admin (like sideboxes) that have to be set for each template individually.

ok, the difference must be in admin settings. Is there any way to transfer these settings? It would be a nice feature to have. They must be located in the database somewhere.

I'm still learning the admin tool and figuring out where everything is located. I'm sure there is logic to it, but its tough to unravel. I'm not computer illiterate having done some programming and simple web pages in the past.

I'm probably not going to worry about this for the time being I've got some books to read and I'm sure I'll figure it out once my knowledge level gets more complete.

If you look in the downloads section, there's a mod that will allow you to make your sidebox settings the default from template to template.
