You can try it at-your-own-risk. There are known incompatibilities between the two, which are largely resolved in the latest v1.3.x version.
There is a partial patch discussed here, which may help you bridge the gap until you can upgrade your site to a newer version. Many folks have met with success using this patch; however it's important to note that it's not complete and is not officially supported.

Please be kind to your users and consider applying it to the 1.2.x-series, so that other legacy users have an easy upgrade path.
Total template rehaul required when migrating to 1.3.x is just not feasible in many cases -- many Zencart users have ordered template design from someone else and unable to do the upgrade themselves (me being an example).
But my hosting provider only supports MySQL 5 now, so I have to use this patch to make it work. Thanks a lot for help!
