Ok finally got it. In case anyone else has the problem this is what I did.

Go into the admin, config ->My Store set the HTML editor to htmlarea. That got it working finally.

Then to fix the images showing up as red X's I had to match the paths. So the URL would be www.mydomain.com/images to match the server path.
