hey, I have changed every file that I saw in the faq/tutorial area to 444 and 644 and nothing happend, what do you suggest?
If you're absolutely certain that the file is not at risk, you can turn off the warning by following the instructions I posted in this thread:

Remember: Overriding security warnings may or may not leave you vulnerable. You have been warned.

did you verify that the changes were made,
this is why I suggested using the control panels file manager rather than ftp to set these permissions

Hey, I was able to go in and make the proper changes. Thank you for your help.
this warning message suddenly started appearing on my site a couple of days ago, even though I had changed nothing on the site. I fixed it with the instructions here, but a couple of questions come to mind:
1) why did it suddenly appear? something must have changed somewhere without my knowing it.
2) why does changing the permissions with my ftp client not work and I need to go through the cpanel? ftp permissions has always worked for me before.

Your host probably switched to running php as cgi
thats why the requirement for 444 since 644 files can still be written to by the software
as for not being able to set 444 in ftp not a clue, been trying to figure that one out
