Hyperlink to Show categories in main page

I would like to know if there is a way to show the categories in the main page from a user clicking a hyperlink.

I know the main portion is built from the file

tpl_index_categories.php

But I'd like to only display the categories when someone clicks a link on the page?

Any idea what the href would look like? and do I have to build a new .php file to do this? If so what would the source look like.
