    Default splitting orders in boxes

Hi, my shop is sending goods from japan and since the shipping costs are really high we decided to find a smart way to cut shipping prices and this is what we found out:
If you are sending packages that are smaller or equal to 2kg (my goods normally go from 1.5kg up to 2.5kg) you pay a lot less than sending a big package of more kilograms, so if a person orders something like 2 of my goods getting a total of 3kg of goods i can split it up into 2 different packages saving money for my customer and encouraging him/her to buy more from us.
Unfortunately Zencart divides the weight equally, that means, if i get a order of 2 different goods one of 1.8kg and another one of 3 zencart would split it into two packages of 2.4 kg each and that's TERRIBLY WRONG since i can't split my goods given that they consist of a single piece. i would need zencart to split it into 2 packages, one weighting 1.8 and the other one weighting 3. Is there a way to get zencart doing it?

Is there someone out there who knows how to get Zencart to split orders into two packages when the weight becomes to high for one package? This will depend on the shipping company used of course. For example I can only ship up to 20Kg for one company, so if a customer orders more there is an error message saying the shipping can not be calculated at this time. I have another shipping company that goes up to 31Kg and another that will go to 68. Any thoughts?

    Cheers,

    Jeff

You can try looking at my post here:
    http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79770
where I figured out how to turn off shipping modules for various weights of individual items. of course with some help ;)

Your right in that zen cart splits boxes evenly and that this may not always, or ever be correct. But specifically at the end of the post where I explain what I may do next might be along the lines of something that you could use in your case.

PM me if you need some help getting started.

I would like an answer to this question as well, it has not been solved.

Bumping this to call attention to this issue, which is closely related to the desire to enforce that each box can only have a single item in it.

This would require quite a bit of customization to break the order in to separate boxes and get the quote for each box separately then sum it for the shipping costs ...

This is not built into Zen Cart at this time ... but it could be written ...

Have you got your coder hat on?

Or are you burning hole$ in your pocket$ to $olve this problem?
