I may be overlooking the obvious but is it possible to just set the shipping price for each individual item listed like you do on eBay when you enter it in the database?

The Shipping Module Per Unit perweightunit utilizes the Weight of the Product(s) and Attribute(s) and then multiplies that by a rate to give the Shipping Cost ...
You might see if that would work for you ...![]()

On Product Weight you enter 2.65 and that would be $2.65 for shipping ...
You enter 0.35 on Product Weight and that would be $0.35 for shipping ...
Buy quantity 3 of a Product with the weight of .50 and the shipping would be:
3 * 0.50 = $1.50
