Subcategory Descriptions

I have found threads of this question being asked several times, but it has not quite been answered, or I have missed it somehow. When I click on a category in the sidebox, I would like the linked page to show subcategories in list format with each subcategory image beside its name and description. Currently this page only allows a grid format including image and name without description. How do I make my list with description happen?

It would require some additional programming of php code...

You can however limit the number of categories listed per row in the Maximum Values section under Configuration.

Thank you, I did limit the number of categories to one per row and that is a good start.

Which php code would I alter and how? I have nosed around in my includes/templates/my_template/templates/tpl_index_categories.php and don't really know how to write or where to put the code that would change the visual format as well as make the subcategory description show up.

The exact look I want on each category page is to include each subcategory's image, name link, and description horizontally, one subcategory per row.

From a customer standpoint, I would prefer to see a list with above-mentioned items rather than having to click through every time to see what that subcategory is all about. It is not always self-explanatory by the image or name, and text enriches the page.

Yeah, when you are on the Category page and have the links to the subcategories, I would like a truncated description to go along with it. Anyone done this?
