categories section showing up for specific sections

Is it possible to have category sections showing up for specific sections similar to how Amazon.com and overstock use to have? I am referring to the sidebox section.

Say for instance you have three categories in your store. Accessories, electronics, consumer goods. If you choose accessories then in the sidebox only the subcategories in Accessories will show up.

similar to how Amazon.com is set up, when I choose Apple Ipods from MP3 players from the categories sidebox on this page:

I get Accessories, iPod Nanos, iPod Shuffles, iPods showing up in the categories sidebox only:
