Blank Value???

Hi, i have just created all of the attributes for all the products within my site and i have realized that i have a potential problem! if the customer does not pick the attribute value that they want they will be given the default. is there an easy way that i can make a blank value that is set as the default and the product can only be bought when another value is selected? any help appreciated.

Make an additional Option Value:
Pick one
What do you want?
Select from below
You favorite
etc. etc.

Add this as an Attribute set as:
Default YES
Sort Order 0
Display Only YES

Now the customer is forced to make a proper choice and not accidentally just pick one of the other choices or miss a choice ...

Hi thanks for the reply i cant find where i would select default and display only for the value, i have made the value as color like the rest of my values. How do i change to the settings that you have said?

Also is there a way i can set it so that i can add it to every product with attributes on already rather then adding it individually?

You have an Option Name:
Color

You make your new Option Value for Color as:
Pick One
Sort Order 0

You go to your Product in the Attributes Controller and you add the new Attribute:
Option Name: Color
Option Value: Pick One
Sort Order: 0
(in colored boxes are the options)
Used For Display Purposes Only: YES
Default Attribute to be Marked Selected: YES

You can copy Attributes to a Product or Category or use one of the mass copy features AFTER you have made a BACKUP of your database such as in Option Value Manager:

Copy Option Name/Value to Products with existing Option Name ...
Select an Option Name and Value that currently exists on a product or products to add to all products or to only the products in the selected category that have the selected Option Name.
Example: Add Option Name: Color Option Value: Red to all Products with Option Name: Size
Example: Add Option Name: Color Option Value: Green with default values from Products ID: 34 to all Products with Option Name: Size
Example: Add Option Name: Color Option Value: Green with default values from Products ID: 34 to all Products with Option Name: Size for Categories ID: 65

Ok im trying to add one value "choose a finish" [color] with default:yes display purpose:yes to every set of attributes on the website.

I am slightly stuck as to what i have to do now

I am on the options value page trying to use the "Copy Option Name/Value to Products with existing Option Name .." section.

I have selected Option Name to add:color
Option Value to add:choose a finish[COLOR]

Default New Attribute Values from Product ID# or leave blank for no default values:ID#1 (i have already added the choose a finish value to this product)

Option Name to add to:color

This is the section i am not to sure about

Leave blank for ALL Products or
enter a Category ID for Products to update

How should existing product attributes should be handled?
Update existing attributes with new settings/prices
Ignore existing attributes and add only new attribute
