Display sub category (first tier only)

I am need to display the first level of subcategories in the Category sidebox, but not expand all. I've looked through the forum pretty thoroughly and I have the feeling I'm missing something obvious - I just can't get this to work. So throughout the site - including the home page - I want the four main categories, and each of their main subcategories to show in the sidebox.

I am working on version 1.3.7.

I have tried various modules (including Category Listing Box, and the ch_categories.zip file, both of which were great at expanding all the subcategories, but for our store that's a whole lot of nav!)

The settings for the Product Listing Box show that
"Show SubCategories on Main Page while navigating" is set to 1,

and in Layout Settings
"Categories - Always Open to Show SubCategories" is set to 1

Does anyone have any idea what I've missed/can do to fix this? Thanks in advance, Cait

Same here.. I just need Top Level and first sub-level on only...

I have this in the admin:

Categories - Always Show on Main Page 1
Main Page - Opens with Category 22_23_24
Categories - Always Open to Show SubCategories 1

and here is the result:

You'll notice that the sub-categories are displaying just like I want them too.. but the home page is opening up to the Extras section (id 24) instead of opening to the home page.

Any thoughts??
