Default update a product that's already in the cart -- ie: adding gift wrapping

    Hi,

Is it possible to change the attributes of a product that's already in the cart? At the moment I seem to have to delete the existing product and re-add a new instance of the product to the cart.

The reason why I want to do this is that I'm trying to use attributes to enable gift wrapping of books. Intuitively it makes more sense for someone to think about gift wrapping after they've added the book to their cart, rather than before. And if they change their mind as to what colour of paper they want, it's not intuitive that they should delete the book.

The other place where I think it makes a lot of sense is when you have lots of attributes. If you were buying a PC with twenty plus configuration options, you'd like to be able to change your mind about one or two of those options without having to re-select all twenty.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks a lot for your help.

At this time, when a Product in the Cart has attributes and the same Product is added with changed or alerted attributes you will get 2 products in the cart ...

In a future release we will be working towards a distinction on Add to Cart and Update Cart for this ...

    Thanks Ajeh,

That's great news that this is on your roadmap.

In the meantime, am I right to assume that this change would require a strong skill level with PHP? Any thoughts on a quick-and-dirty workaround that would allow someone with only medium-level skills (ie me ) achieve something comparable? I have no need for the option between "add-to" and "update" so I could quite happily override the current "add-to" functionality if that simplifies things. I also only have one attribute, in case that makes a difference to my options.

    Any pointers would be great!!

Thanks also to afo for your feedback. I'm using it at the moment and it's very useful, but it is built on the current "add-to" functionality.

    Cheers,

    Possum.
