multiple products, same item#

I sell a product that in my inventory system we'll say is part number "X". This product is sold under many different manufacturer part numbers and at different prices, even though they are really all the same part. I want to set up a new web store but i need to list product "X" seperately under its various manufacturers part numbers and prices. Problem is, i inventory them under 1 generic part number. I need it so when any of the different part numers are looked at, the qty. of my generic part number is what is there for purchase. and the change in qty. available is reflected by each purchase. I want to use easy populate or something to import my inventory and need it so that 1 generic part number is imported, the other mfr. part numbers reflect its value. Is this possible?

I can't see any obvious way to do this with a standard Zen Cart installation. It sounds like something that would require a custom mod.

You'd have to mod the database, the inventory control function, the templates which display model number, and the search facility. Mucho hacking awaits you.
