How do i prevent the Breadcrumb showing up on the mainpage and only showing up on subsequent pages, as it's unnecessary on the Main page (Home page) and only serves to take away layout space there.

It doesn't look neat as it's not even a link. There is already something that shows this is the Homepage.

It only makes sense when someone starts clicking on inside pages

You can turn off the breadcrumb on homepage in Admin/Configuration/Layout Settings/Define Breadcrumb Status, set to 2.

What about removing the border from appearing around the content area. There is a border that is one pixel thick and that sorrounds the category menu as well as the border.
