Default Off Line Install and Setup

I have seen this done, and have also been told it can be done. I cannot figure out how tho.
I had a site that I wanted to leave LIVE on its host and platform while I built a new ZEN site.

At first, my WHM person said it could not be done. then, she managed to install zen but instead of to the actual domain, which was pointing to the at the time live host, she had to have me access it as:

    http://70.80.92.44/~username/admin (example)

I am trying to do this myself for another site, and cannot. I tried going into the admin panel through the "back door" sort of and accessing the fantastico section to install zen, but zen gives the message that I cannot install, i get this message.

You are logged in using the root or reseller password. Please log in using the account's password in order to use Fantastico. Any installations using root or reseller password will fail.
then another person tells me this:
"oh yes this is done all the time. go into your config file (I cannot go into my config file because I don't HAVE one cause I cannot install ZEN) and change the url from where you'd normally put the domain to the direct server link which is http://70.80/92.44/~username (example) and replace username with the user name that you set up when you set up the account. Then once you change the nameservers on the domain, pop into the config files again and change them to the domain."
Well I cannot figure out how to do this either because I cannot even get the config file over TO there cause I cannot install.
Also was told: "to set up anything on a domain such as zen, use any FTP program" ok, to do what? I have to have the files first.
I am basically being to upload my files for whatever programs (zen) but i cannot because i don't get the files until I install.
Plus, although I have added the domain and account to the WHM panel, I cannot even figure out how to ftp to it anyway cause I don't know how to contact it via ftp.
I have spent days on this, I hope someone can help me.

ok, i did finally catch on that I could download the files from zen, so i did that, i hope i downloaded the right thing, i used the patch file zen-cart-v1.3.7.1-full-patched-07052007.zip Mirror i hope i only needed the one file.

now i have extracted it to my desktop. I am thinking I should upload these to the temp site?

if i can figure out how to upload it to my "temp" site, i cannot ftp as normal because the site is not actually pointed to this WHM area.

I have to try to access the area on the server, but since it is not LIVE i don't have a clue how to upload and maybe this is NOT the answer? I gotta try something.

    i give up lol.

filezilla won't upload the files, the directions recommend filezilla so i hoped it would work.

i started with the zc install folder, i was not sure which files were scripts in the directions so not sure which folders need to be uploaded or upload all of them, but the first upload i send over filezilla is stuck and keeps saying, type is now ascii, type is now binary, and then eventually says restarting at zero.
so at a loss, any ideas appreciated.

Started uploading the files using filezilla yesterday around 1:00 CST, I cannot imagine it taking 12 hours to load, but anyway, it was still loading this morning around 2:00. Finally it just timed out and gave up, there must be something I'm doing wrong that I cannot upload the files.

I would use something besides filezilla.

I recently tried to change some things in my config. files and when i uploaded them they lost all there line breakes and everything was on 2 lines.

My site was down for like 30 minutes and i was freaking out!

I went into my godaddy ftp client and uploaded some backups i had and the problem was solved.

I only use filezilla to change permissions on files, but I wont use it for backing up my files or uploading any new ones.

I would give it a try with a different ftp program.

Don't upload the whole package in one shot either. I would manually upload it piece by piece if I was you.
