Product descriptions still show up

I have the product description set to 0 under config>product listing>display product listing and they don't show up when you look by category, however if you select "all products" or "new products" it shows up. It also has the standard one column layout while I have it set to 3 columns and that works when you go by category. Is it an independent thing when you list them by all products or new products? Is that why they show up different than when you just go to your categories?

Look in Configuration at the New Listing, Featured Listing etc. pages. Each of them controls a different type of catalog listing page.
