Should I be able to use animated gif for a product picture? Right now, I see only smadged lines on product listings and detail pages. However, when I click on the "larger image" text on product page, I see the animated gif (two pictures going back and forth) fine.

You are using Image Handler? I seem to remember someone else having trouble with animated gifs. Not sure you can resolve it.
