Granted, the zc_install upgrade process no longer requires visibility of the admin folder during upgrades. As long as it can validate the storefront as being functional, it will ignore the admin side during the upgrade.
    Thank you for clarifying.

Hi I got past my upgrading the database problem by resetting the admin name and password.
I'm sure I was entering the correct name and password in my earlier attempts, but if I wasn't shouldn't Zencart have said so?

Instead I was just given a white page. Odd.

anyway keep up the good work guys, I'll keep plugging away with my new install.

    Regards

    Steven

Yes, if the wrong username/password are used, it will say so.

Resetting the password shouldn't be necessary, and is unlikely to be related to blank screen problems.
