Error: Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server

When I'm filling database info during install, I'm getting following error:
Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client

I've read that this problem may be doe to SQL prior to 4.1.1 version. My hosting providers runs 4.1.22.

What can be wrong?

PHP version is 4.4.7 - may be this cause this error?
