Upgrading 1.3.7.1 to 1.3.8 required?

I am currently running 1.3.7.1 on several clients and currently would like to postpone upgrading until the beginning of next year.

Are there any security matters that would require me to upgrade sooner?

My own opinion: upgrade as soon as possible, but you don't have to rush.

No pressing security issues. Just bugfixes. If things are working fine, best to wait until after your Holiday Rush.
That doesn't mean you can't start working on the upgrade "before" then. In fact, start today... kick the tires. Play around. Set up a test site. Do a test upgrade. Roll your sleeves up and have fun !
