Adjusting Number of Categories Per Row on main page

Hi, I'm trying to adjust my main page category display so that there are multiple categories per row, rather than a long vertical column of categories.

I found the "Categories To List Per Row" setting under Maximum Values, and it seems like this should do the trick, but it is not working. It's set to 3 and I'm still getting 1 category per row; if I change it to 5, my column of categories moves over to the left as though it's pretending there are 4 other columns that need to fit.

So it seems like something is broken here. Anyone have any ideas? The site is at http://www.softeegolfproducts.com/cart/

First off, optimize your images! It is taking a couple of minutes to load your home page (on DSL). Those thumbnail files should only be a fraction of the size they are.
You have thumbnail images up to 2 mb in size! That is about 500 times the size they should be. Nobody is ever going to look at your site like that.

Any idea on getting the pictures in rows?
