Default Description in site page area

I saw a site that had a brief description under the headings in their site map. Is there a way for me to do the same with the one provided?

I have also been told that I can create a site map with the help of some websites. I went to one to see how it was done. They are asking that once you are given the code, that you are to place it between the heading and body tags of the home page. Well, I do not have those tags. I tried placing it where I figured they would be but it did not work. I also added the tags and then placed the code but that did not work either. I also needed to figure this out to use a free feature from google to help me figure out what is wrong with my site to get better rankings.

Can someone tell me how to create these tags or where to put these codes if they do not exist?

To change the text for the site map you could go to Admin->Tools->Define Pages Editor and select define_site_map.php from the drop down menu, and edit the changes you need there.

The edit you were talking about with the site map where you insert some code between the header and body sounds a little complex, could you maybe post some more details about this (the code, or where you found this information)

I tried using define page editor but it doesn't show the site map at all. It only shows a comment I made above the site map. Should I be seeing my site map when I use define page editor? What am I doing wrong then?

The only thing you should see with the Define Pages Editor-> define_site_map.php is:

To assist you in navigating our site, we have provided the following map.
If you are having difficulty in locating something on our site, please visit our 'Contact Us' page and let us know!

Unless of course you changed that message to something custom.

Now, the names of the links for the site map are in Includes/Languages/English/site_map.php
if you change anything in this file, you want to save the file to Includes/Languages/English/YOUR_CUSTOM_TEMPLATE_FOLDER/site_map.php

This tutorial explains a bit about the template overrides:
How do I set up the template overrides?

This site map page that contains the links themselves and the code for the display on the page: includes\templates\template_default\templates\tpl_site_map_default.php
again, if you edit this, you want to save it to:
    includes\templates\your_custom_template\templates\tpl_site_map_default.php
