adding graphics to the sides

Please forgive me, but I am very new at this and I am trying to pick up where someone else left off. I have done some searches through the threads, but have not found an answer. I think if I was a little bit more familiar on how to change the look and feel of the website I could apply what was said in the other threads...well with all of that, my question is:

I am trying to add a background graphics under the product categories on the left and the various links on the right. How can I do this? Please note, the person before me has already did some customization to the look and feel; therefore applying overrides.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!
