Security error when trying to login

I am attempting to set up Zen Cart but getting this error when trying to log in as a customer.
"There was a security error when trying to login"

1) I am not using SSL
2) I have tried reseting password, clearing cache & history
3) I have tried from a second browser that has never visited the site
4) I tried the fix reported in another post {changing my tpl_header file to} <?php echo zen_href_link(FILENAME_LOGIN, '', 'NONSSL'); ?>
5) I am using paypal ipn and check/money order as payment options

PHP Version: 5.2.5 (Zend: 2.2.0)
HTTP Server: Apache/1.3.39 (Unix) mod_log_bytes/1.2 mod_bwlimited/1.4 mod_auth_passthrough/1.8 mod_ssl/2.8.30 OpenSSL/0.9.8b

What version of Zen Cart? Clean install or upgrade?

Clean install of version Zen Cart 1.3.8a

If you switch back (temporarily) to the classic template do you still get the error?

The Amazon in my avatar is our 25 year old Blue Front. He is one of several parrots in my house, includes 2 African Greys and a Cockatoo.

If I use the theme "Classic Contemporary Green" I still have the same issue

I have 2 blue front amazons, 1 double yellow head amazon, 1 military macaw, 1 umbrella cockatoo and 1 white capped pionus

Hmmm? were did the edit button go? It says I can edit my posts but I dont see a link or button to do it with... Anyway.
Im trying to find someone to create an account to see if they have the same issue but no luck yet.
I have to run out for a bit and may have pc access at the hospital so will try making a second account from there to see if I can reproduce the issue.

I Am afraid that I don't have an answer for you, however I was able to reproduce the behavior that you are describing. When I created a new account, it proceeded normally and then logged me in when I was finished. I logged out, and then attempted to log back in. I got the security error that you saw after entering my username and password.

I am sorry - that one is weird and outside my area of expertise, however, it does appear to be global and not related to issues on specific boxes.

Sad to say but I have verified the same. I was in hopes it would work from another computer connection and figure it was just my pc or network but I too have tried from elsewhere and get the exact same results
I have searched the forums but no luck finding someone with the same problems so am totally stuck at this point.

Are you using the login box mod?

No, just trrying to log in from either msg on main paig or link at top of page, both of which redirect you to www.mysite.com/index.php?main_page=login
