Product Notification

After reading various threads I think I understand that the product notifications don't automatically send out notices when new products are added, it just adds you to the list of the update newsletter ?

Also, I noticed that the product notification option ( when turned on ) is only available on the actual product info page. Shouldn't this be in the category instead ? After all, once I set up a product, I rarely update that particular product so why the need for a notification of an update on the product ? What I need is an update on the category. For example, when I add a new product to any category.

And, I noticed when I went to my Admin and checked out the Newsletter and Product Notification Manager, the only thing there is to send a newsletter. So, if it's just a newsletter, why call it a product notification ? Does this mean that by checking on the " Notify me of updates to this product " you are basically just subscribing to the newsletter ?

I guess I don't really understand the difference between the newsletter and product notification and how they are different. If there is a tutorial, thread or somewhere that explains it better, please point me in the direction. I have searched everything I can think of and not found it yet.

Thanks Jammin ! I had found that first thread allready and the second link ya have there helped.

So, I guess there is no update notification for a category instead of a product. Doesn't make sense to me to have an update on a product and not a category. :)

Fair enough - that is the trick with a product like this, we all have different business needs. Keep an eye out, you may find someone who will make a MOD that will do just that.

Yep, I agree , hopefully someone will be interested enough to create a mod for it. I have no idea how so guess I will have to wait. :)

did anyone come up with a mod in the end to choose a category update?

I also noticed within the customer control panel that the customer can choose to be notified on all products. is there a way to put a checkbox link in the opening registration (set default to on) for "notify about new products"?
