Is it possible to set up a recurring payment or donation within Zen Cart. Example, a friend of the charitable organization I represent wants to have $50 a month automatically billed to his VISA.

At the present time Zen Cart does not offer support for recurring payments.
However, there is an addon you might explore.
I've not used it personally though..
