Could someone please tell me how to remove the white space and the links between the bottom of my header logo and the start of my main page text.
I have added a screenshot with the area I would like to remove marked in red...

That is the categories-tabs menu.
You can turn it off in Configuration > Layout Settings.

Can someone tell me what this highlighted section in the original post is called? I've been trying to figure out how to edit the spacing between the category links that appear in this section on my site, but I can't even figure out what this section is called.

That is the categories-tabs menu (#navCatTabs in the stylesheet).
