VAT (tax) problems

My site now seems to be doing something with the UK sales tax eg VAT. The VAT total shows as a separate amount but both the net and the gross already include the vat. eg. net 117.5 VAT 117.5 Gross117.5

Does anyone know what is wrong?

OK I understand -- if Display Prices with Tax is TRUE then when one checks out the total includes the tax and the sales tax just shows up but it makes no sense to o it this way. Is there not a way where each product includes the etax but on checkout the initial net total is just that eg net price without tax included?
