USPS incredibly slow on checkout

hi, the connection to usps is incredibly slow on checkout pages. this just started a few days ago. does anyone know how to fix it?? i have applied the patch from november and all was well until saturday.

Have you checked with them to find out if there is a problem with their servers?

on the forum some people have checked and they say there isnt. my host says there is. it is clear that it must be them since when i disable usps connection the site runs fine. it is only slow on pages that access usps.
