per-item shipping - can some items count as 2?

I have a question regarding using per-item shipping. I currently use per-item shipping, with $4.00 as my base and $0.35 added for each item. but as I have added more items I found found that I now have items that weigh considerable more than most of the items, up to 3x as much, and just had an order where I lost on shipping caz the order consisted ENTIRELY of the heavier items.

My question is, is there a way to use per-item shipping and have certain select items count as 2 or even 3 items when calculating shipping? (otherwise I need to change to per-weight shipping which means I need to update every one of my product - unfortunately each currently has "Products Shipping Weight:" set to "0" - UGH)

But normally would use per weight - set weight to not show - use 1 for your base items and some other value for the heavier items that insures you cover costs.

In your example for most items weight = 1 and you enter in the shipper va handling fee of $3.65 and a per lb fee of $0.35 so that an order of 1 nets 4.00, 2 nets 4.35 etc.

A heavier item that say you need $6.00 to cover costs you assign a weight of 7lbs
So you get 3.65+7x.35=$6.10

as mentioned I currently use per-unit for my shipping. In order to use per-weight I would need to update the weight fields in each and every one of my products, currently every one is set to "0". is there perhaps a quick way to update that field in every product at the same time?

so knowing that what you mentioned would work... and the fact that I am lazy :-)
