Good work dmwizzard! Thats pretty much the same direction I was heading.

After I downloaded the full new version I kept thinking about just loading the new install folder to see what happens...

So...after reading your results and yes, backing up things I think I'll dive over the rail and just try the install folder theory.

    I'll report my findings...

It worked! I uploaded only the zc_install folder. Heres what worked for me:

After trying to update through Fantastico the database did not update, so to work around manually...
    1. Back up everything you are nervous of loosing.
    2. Download latest version 1.3.8a
    3. Unzip and upload the zc_install to your server into the /shop folder. Or what ever you named your store.
    4. Use your web browser to go to the address of the zc_install folder, ie yourdomain.com/shop/zc_install
    5. Run update database ONLY.
It will require being run for every upgrade level. I was starting with 1.3.5 so it upgrade 3 times to get to 1.3.8. I checked via the Zen Cart admin-tools-Server/Version info drop down window after the first run and saw it had updated me one version. I used the browser "back" button and made it resend info and was able to get it to run the next update. Had to load in password and user name for each update.
    6. I suspect this method is at best a work around. You will encounter a little weirness when you wait for the update to process, a nearly blank page with no indication of anything running/or happening. Thats when you go check via admin to see if you got move up a version.

It's a clunky way to do it, but seemed to work.
Good luck and...did you back things up? better do it or...
