digital downloads - how does the customer get a download link?

When a customer buys a ebook from my store, and that ebook is attibuted for digital download, how and when does the customer get the download. do they get it through an email, or does a link pop up etc...

does the "options name" need to be different for every product? right now i have all my products with "downloads" as an option name, but they all have different values

option name first then create as many option values for it as required...
