Hide center sub categories

Hello,

When a user clicks on a category in the left side box is expands and shows the subcategories. But on the new page it also shows all the subcategories across the top, just above the "new products" listings. we want to do ths following:

1. keep left box expanding
2. hide center column subcategory links (not the tabs that you can disable in admin section) so that they will use left box
3. have the page show a random mix of all items from that major category and let them drill down more specifically using left box. I don't know if leaving the "new in february" will cut it because then next month it will only show new stuff in march that was uploaded. we want to show a random mix of all things that satisfy that parent category regardless of which subcategory.
