only two categories function

I have a new 1.3.8a install which works fine, except that I seem to be limited to 2 categories. I can set up more categories, enter products, and they function as they should in admin. New categories appear in the categories list in the store. But when I click on the new categories the result is a blank page.

Everything seems to be as it should.

Categories test and test2 demonstrate the behaviour. Both have live products.

The ACE 10 Judson Supercharger Oil, 2.5 litre item which appears in 'passenger car oils' is duplicated in both test and test2.

This also happens when adding a product to the cart. I see a totally blank page (no HTML output at all), but going back and clicking on the shopping cart shows the product in the cart.

When the blank pages display, the address bar shows the correct url that should be displaying.

Hmm. I haven't got that far yet! Seems a major malfunction then. I did a quick install using the cPanel thing. Maybe first step is to start again.

Correct URL also shows when going to product page.
