category sort order by language

Can categories and subcategories be listed in different orders in different languages?

We want the interface to list categories in the side menu in one order in one language (category a, b, c) and in another language to list categories in a different order (category b, a, c) - alphabetical in each language

Any ideas?

It could be done but would require custom coding.

You would need to duplicate the sort order field from the categories table to the categories_descriptions table (which recognises language) and then change the database queries to get the sort order from the new location.

There would be no maintenance of the value through the admin, as that would still be pointing towards the old location. But you could easily maintain them using a database tool such as phpMyAdmin instead.
