attribute set for date

Hi,
On my site I need to obtain a date from the customer (a date of birth or date of anniversary etc)

At the moment I use a text field and tell the customer what format to use but some customers don't read the instructions and provide the date in the wrong format.

Does anyone know how to have 3 attributes group together and be treated as a single attribute so the attribute set would be called date of birth with a dropdown for day (1-31) a dropdown for month (Jan-Dec) and a text field for year

Also I would like them to be displayed side by side rather than on seperate lines.

Any help would be appreciated.

Does anyone have any idea how I can achieve this or would I be best making 3 seperate attributes called "date of birth (day)", "date of birth (month)" and "date of birth (year)" where day and month are dropdowns and year is text?
