Images directory - Permissions issue?

Hey all,

I have a strange problem and I feel very stupid having to ask...

I was setting up the various things ready for my site to go live on Monday (Australian time).... and while changing the permission on the main images folder, it seems to have gone AWOL!

I now cannot see it in my ftp client, I cannot create a new "images" folder (with my backup of the folder), but my shop now hasn't got access either to its appropriate pictures! There are a few that are working because they were put in the wrong place early on (I think anyway), but the majority of my 400-500 products don't have pictures now!!!

Is there something obvious that I'm missing here? By changing the permission of the folder to 0644 have I done something more than I planned to?!

I wondered if I had inadvertently moved the folder to within another or something stupid but I have checked them all and no sign of the mysterious images folder anywhere.

After having made a big effort to get through the various permission changes etc, I really don't want to have to use the backup to pre-permission (etc) changes if I don't have to....!!!

(I do have a backup from just before I started the changes though)

SO... any one got any suggestions? I tried to do searches of the forums for someone in a similar situation but either this hasn't happened before, or more likely, I cannot find suitable key words to match the help I need!!

Image folder should be re-uploaded because it has to exist for your pictures to be displayed...

You can use your FTP Client and reset permissions in masse by selecting all images and changing the permissions.

I've tried to do as you suggested - although so far to no avail.

If I try to first create a directory in the live part (using my ftp client) called "images" and it won't allow me and gives the error message "550 images: no such file or directory".

I have looked at the permissions on the local copies of the files and it doesn't have so many options as it does on the remote version... basically only read or hidden check boxes. I just created a new directory ("images_transfer") just to see how it would go, and it let me create that and transfer files, so its not a transfer problem "on the whole"...

Any other suggestions....?

Hey all,

I just wanted to let anyone else who may have this problem down the track know that in the end I logged into my hosting provider, used their manual file-manager type thing to restore the images folder from a backup, then manually changed the permissions back to a low-level-security (for now) until we can work out what happened.

I think the images folder was there all along but for some reasons the permissions changed it more than I anticipated - it was definitely 0644 which I would think should still be visible if not accessible to me.... maybe the server had a glitch when I did it - not sure... but its working again now!!
