I was puttering around all happy and this happened:

I did something. What?

I went and looked at tpl_index_default.php and it doesn't look any different than on my backup-untouched-by-human- hand one, and I wasn't messing in there anyway, I was in the admin defines editor for define_main_page.php and index.php

I had messed up on the permissions.

On my linux server my files should have been set to 644 and directories to 755.

All fixed. Hope this helps someone else in the same pickle.
