Default Status & Edit colored buttons not displaying

    This is a strange one!

The colored buttons that are supposed to display in the admin screens (status red/green/yellow; edit, etc) are not displaying at all in my Firefox browser.

With IE, they are replaced with the missing image red X symbol.

Is there a place where I need to turn on the display of these?

    Thanks.

Could the image files have gotten deleted or moved from their proper location?

Did you ever see the icons in this installation? If so, when did it break?

Everything was installed without any changes - pure vanilla. The images have never been there, right from the beginning.

Where are these images stored? I could look there to see if they are intact.

    Thanks.

I just checked and found all the images in the admin/images folder. They are there and their attributes are 644.

So why are they not displaying? My browsers are all set to display images, by the way.

On the broken image links, if you right-click and choose Properties, what is the exact URL+path to those broken images?

What happens if you put that URL into your browser? It should display just the image. But, if yours are not displaying, it should tell you what kind of error message you're getting.

Here's the error message I got when I searched on the images URL obtained from its properties:

    Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /store/admin/images/pixel_trans.gif on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Okay, now you have to find out why it's forbidden.

Your webserver's errorlog should tell you more about the cause of the 404-forbidden error.

Have you enabled hotlink protection on your hosting account for some reason? Sometimes that can cause weird behavior.

I don't know how to access the server's error log and I don't know how to enable hotlink!

Can you steer me in the right direction?

    Thanks.

Your hosting company's control panel should give you access to those controls.
You'll have to contact them for specific assistance in using your control panel tools.

OK - here is the solution, diagnosed and fixed by the friendly support people at Hostgator...

The permissions were not set correctly. They changed the permissions for folders to 755, and to 644 for the files. They had tried a few other things first, but this seems to be the resolution.

    Thanks for all your help.

    Terry
