Number of Products in a Category

I am trying to figure out how Zen Cart calculates the number of products in a category. My friend is writing a custom script for me, and he will need this information to help generate my new layout.

I know that Zen Cart calculates this information, because the default cart has will say something to the effect of
"Displaying X to Y (of Z products)"

I need to figure out how to reference to the number (Z) of products.

I do not know PHP vey well, but does any know what this PHP "string" or "variable" is called? Or how to get Zen Cart to calculate that number?
