Changing My Domain Name

Hello all,
I have decided to change my domain name but to keep the old one.

My current domain name is http://www.oldwestgames.com.

I am changing the name to http://www.oldwestpokersupplies.com to take advantage of having the word poker in my domain name thereby hopefully increasing my google page rank.

Will this work? And what is the best way to do this if I am going to continue to use the same host?

Will a 301 redirect on the oldwestgames.com domain suit my purposes?

Will having Ultimate SEO URLs affect any of this?

Thanks in advance.

Salvatore

Re: Changing My Domain Name

I don't know about the ultimate SEO URL's, but in my experience a 301 redirect is the way to go. If you are using the same host, you won't even have to move anything. Just get the new domain name pointing to the correct ip address and simply market the new name. Have all your link partners update the links and you should be good to go.

Thanks Tammy. My hosting co. is ready to move on this but I'm going to have to do this offline first to test it. I have to do a ZenCart upgrade anyway.

Thanks again.

Re: Changing My Domain Name

i'm also changing domain name. had sum questions. why when i press the online catalog button in zencart, my old domain name comes up. the old domain name is still active (moldinart.com). I want to make its so bambolera.com is my online catalog-not moldinart.

also, when i print a page from bambolera.com, the very top of the printed page says moldinart. how can i change the text at the top of a page that is printed from my store? i know i changed that text before, just can't find where i did it.

thank you in advance for your time ....i must seem like a dummy. :frusty:

Re: Changing My Domain Name

Hello,

Im thinking of changing my domain name as well but would like to maintain what I have already done with the website (i.e. payment gateway, layout etc.)

What is the best way to do this?

Thank you

Re: Changing My Domain Name

Change the includes/configure.php and the admin/includes/configure.php to use the new domain name.

Re: Changing My Domain Name

Berserker,

If this is installed at the root of your hosting account at say:

abc.com and you want to now have it be cde.com

Then you should also request your host to change your account tp cde.com

Re: Changing My Domain Name

Hello kobra,

My webhost is ready to change my account to the new domain name. They are just waiting for my confirmation.

Im just worried about my payment gateway. So I do not have to do anything with my payment gateway right?

Re: Changing My Domain Name

Depending on which one and the configuration details either yes or no.

If part of the configuration is that the account is registered to abc.com and you change this then yes. Others - You enter a code and can use for several shops.

Re: Changing My Domain Name

Just want to add, can I have my new domain as an addon and then have my zen-cart from old domain point to the new domain? Or will that not work?

Re: Changing My Domain Name

Combined Response:
Private SSL Certs are issued to a specific domain name and are not portable -
A new Certificate will need to be obtained

As an add-on domain is not actually a seperate discreet domain but a masked sub-domain An SSl Cert issued to the domain name will throw an error with an Add-On domain
Just want to add, can I have my new domain as an addon and then have my zen-cart from old domain point to the new domain?

Would be better all around to have your main account domain changed to the new domain and add the old domain as a parked domain that will automatically redirect

Re: Changing My Domain Name

Ok, so I will buy a new SSL for the new domain and have it installed. Do I need to change anything in Zen-Cart for the new SSL to work or will it work just like the old one did?

Re: Changing My Domain Name

You'll just set the HTTPS address in your configure.php files to the correct new details.
