Stock quantity depending on attribute

I want to have body jewellery as a product. Each item will come in a range of sizes and colours. I know I can use attributes to add a drop down to the customer page so they can choose which size and colour they want but how do I tell them that one size and/or colour may have sold out?

Zen Version 3.7, Stock by Attributes v 4.6
Trying to get stock by attribute to show.

I can get one set of attributes - size- to accept stock numbers (but they do not show - only total product stock shows).

A second set of attibutes, colour, will show but will not display a place to enter stock numbers, and therefore obviously not show the stock available.

The Stock by Arritbutes v 4.7 says its for 3.8 - can I use it on 3.7?

I found ref to add code in archives to show individual stock, but the file suggested to edit, includes/modules/pages/product_info/main_template_vars_attributes.php does not exist in my files.
