Yes, it is, but it's a moot point now as I'm having to do things differently with updating my products now.
I Might just turn the new products off alltogether cause I have to dump my products DB each time before I update the new file. (it's a vendor quirk, not a zencart thing) and will have to do this until I figure out a better way to handle my vendors data.
Ergo, each time I update, ALL the products show up as new products.

Linda, if you go to my site, and click on New Products [more], you'll see one there with no image. I left that there for testing. It's an example of a status 0 product showing up as new.
